Hi everyone
My buff orpington Butterbean started losing some feathers from her back, just above where the tail bit starts, about 6 weeks ago... I thought it was from where our cockerell was jumping on her, but none of our other hens have this and he is equally interested in all of them. She has now lost loads of feathers from her back and I am starting to get really worried... It definietely isn't red mites. My husband says it is just "the moult" - is he right?

Is there anythign I can do about it? The Cockrell is a B.O. too and Butterbean is the only B.O. hen - might that be why?

Hi, you can get her a poultry saddle- or remove the cockerel for a while- they sometimes favour one hen and she will loose her feathers while the others are ok. You can get saddles- try Ebay or your local feed merchant.
regards, David :)

One poultry saddle purchased! Presumably I take it off at night? Do you know how long it will take for her feathers to grow back, and should I leave it off once they have?

Hi, as long as it is fitted properly- you can leave it on- until later in the year- the cockerel should be less active then and the feathers grown back- just check everyday that it is in position and not rubbing.
regards, David :)
