Hi there,

Has anybody lime washed their coop at all? I am in the middle of attempting to rid my coop and girls of red mite, or what I think are red mite. I have read a lot of stuff on US forums about this....

It is caustic so I would imagine it would burn any mite it came into contact with while wet, once dry I don't know. Its cheap enough and will dry fairly quickly if the surface is porous so it won't do any harm giving it a try just keep the chickens away from it until it does.

I think it might be more suitable for use on walls, rather than in the coop, being caustic and very messy, as Dinosaw says. The trouble with anything you use in a coop is that, if fully effective against the mites, it renders the coop unuseable for the hens for quite a long time. Creosote is usual inside wooden coops, but takes ages to dry out and has poisonous fumes as well as being sticky when wet.
