Hello

Has anyone got advice on how to get rid of lice on hens. One of mine is pretty infested at the moment and has lost feathers around her vent area. There are clumps of white, 'chalky' looking material that has formed into lumps where the feathers meet the skin, too. This is also around her vent.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Al

I find in an emergency Frontline drops (x2 drops for a bantam) works extremely well and very fast.( Note that Frontline is not licensed for poultry)
Johnsons anti mite spray is good too, as a preventative measure I use diatom in the nestboxes and dustbath areas.

i use a frontline spray but make sure cover vent when spraying. when i got molly she was so bad iv never seen any thing like it. they sucked so much blood shes now brain damaged.
ou could see the lice dying with n an hour

Where do you buy the Frontline drops from and would it be 4 drops for a large hen (Sussex size)? Can the eggs still be eaten after using it or is there a 7 day withdrawal period?

most chemists do frontline drops but need a prescription for combi and spray. iv even seen them in asda
they come in 3s or 6s and can get them on line at places like medivet o viopet

A couple of observations here.

Frontline is different for dogs and cats. One is very poisonous to the other species. Keeping this in mind, which one are we speaking of ? Also... Both my vet and chemist acknowledge a difference in potency between the one sold at the vets and the chemist... which is used by you guys ?

I have heard of the use of things like tea tree or wormwood .... comments ? :?

Hi, I use a powder to great effect although I live in France so not much help I guess! On a longer term though for prevention. If you feed garlic regularly it should help prevent further outbreaks or t least control it a bit. I have a few hens at the moment with lice but not all (I think this is because they have all been given garlic in the last few days. Hope this helps :-)

Just a note, but after youy've treated them its best to disinfect your coop with detol or similar to help stop re-infection

Sorry to ask but does the disinfectant kill them? I just disinfected today and was going to powder in it too. Would it mean I could just dust perched and nest boxes?
