letting chickens out

I've had my trio of Rhode island reds since last December, they are laying good and settled in well. So far I have kept them in their shed but I am considering allowing them some supervised time in the garden. I plan to clip one of their wings to help prevent them getting onto the garden fences and sheds but I am a bit concerned I might not be able to get them back into the shed without a lot of fuss.

Any advice?
 
Im sure if they have lived in a shed for that long they will know where they live and go to bed without too much fuss-more likely to have a job getting them out I should think! They are probably too hefty to fly over a fence and as they have been kept in are probably also not strong enough . I would let them out ASAP for a run about,flap ,scratch and a dust bath! -it will keep them fit and cheer them up. Ros
 
if your a bit unsure, let them out a couple of hours be4 dusk, they should return to their house quite easily as darkness approaches, they might be harder to get back in in daylight tho the first time
let them out tho, they need to roam

do you feed them treats? mine get a bit of mixed corn in the late afternoon as a treat and if they are out in the garden I use this to bribe them in they soon learn that when I call them to come in they are getting corn and all come running.
 
yes, they will go back to their house at dusk - perfect advice above, let them out for the first time a few hours before dark.

Yes they do get treats and I'll try them at dusk, gotta clip their wing first.

These days the two buff orpingtons I have are tame and brilliant layers - just perfect back garden chucks - keeping us in good supply of eggs.

We let our chickens our for a run around every day they love it .I just get them back in with a corn on the cob lol they love it .I just clapp my hands that seems to work aswell.
 
Agree with all that's been said. My dottes love their afternoon sessions out on the plot for a couple of hours.
Get them in with a shake of the corn pot, although Hattie sometimes develops a deaf ear at this time!! :D
