My crested cream legbar (who is the head bird) strikes out with her feet when I try to pick up one of the other hens. I'm not sure whether she's going for me or the bird. I'm assuming it's me and she's protecting her flock. Had anyone else experienced this behaviour?

I've seen my hens jump/leap and strike out with their legs,it has just never been at me.It is normal hen behaviour,if it is at you though,I just hope she doesn't hurt.

hi Sue
I am assuming from your post you dont have a cockerel running with your girls, if this is the case your cream legbar has taken on the role of the cockerel or "top chicken", and is protecting the rest of the girls, do you find she calls the other girls over for treats etc ?

She's definitely 'top bird', but she doesn't call to the others for treats though.

There is always time :D I have a hen which is top dog, and calls the other hens and cockerels over when she finds something interesting in the grass :-)02
