My hubby went to get some layers pellets and came away with mash by mistake (can't get the staff nowadays!) Anyway we don't know whether this has to be mixed with water as it is a load of powder. Can you feed them this instead of pellets? Many thanks, Claire

You have to mix it with water into a porridge like substance , add the water slowly as too wet is no good.

you can feed it dry or as a mash , my girls really do prefer mash { dry } i dont know why but they go crazy for it where as the pellets they dont quite run out the house and act as crazy for the pellets ethier can be soaked with warm water or cold depending on the weather .

In the cold weather I use layers meal with warm water the girls love it. I also add the cod liver oil and apple cider vinegar into it with the water for 7 days once a month.

Thanks for your advice, it doesn't sound so bad a mistake after all, especially as the weather has turned so bitterly cold now - no snow yet though, I'm keeping my fingers crossed we don't get any. :-)17

My girls used to love warm mash but seem to have gone off it (typical now it's so cold!). I started to dose it up with more and more things (cod liver oil, poultry spice) and they seem to have sussed me out!

The reason they enjoy it dry is because they can pick out the wheat, and leave the powdery stuff which they find a bit boring.I only ever feed mine once I've mixed it warm water.mine go mad for it,but I do add dried mealworms which they love.

Hi again. I gave my girls the warm mash but they seemed very suspicious of it at first (you'd think I,d given them poison!] However, after a while they did eat some though not with great enthusiasm. I put some cider vinegar with it so maybe it was that which put them off. I,m going to try it again today because it is so cold. By the way, alot of my chickens seem afraid of the snow though a few venture out in it. I was surprised when I picked up one of my girls(Edna or Egna as we call her: groan  ) and she was really warm even though she had been out in it for quite a while.

put the apple cider vinegar in the water and just give them warm mash they will soon get used to it :D

When ever i get layers mash, i always mix in HOT water, potato peeling and any other left overs (NO MEAT). They love it, and it also warms them up inside.
