Hi I have recently rescued two new chickens which literally fell of a lorry during transportation. They are eating and drinking well but one has a lame leg which shows no obvious signs of break or major visible damage, there is a cut on it which I wound powdered. It could be bruised as she hit the road after falling off the lorry. She can bear weight on it but not walk properly. Whats the best way to treat it?should I splint it? Or leave,it alone?

CHeers :D

Hi Donnamf and welcome to the Forum. What a surprising story! Ive heard of quite a few things falling off the back of a lorry, but not two chickens before today. Did you just find them on the road? What sort are they? Lucky girls, though, that you were around to take them in.
If there's no visible damage and she can bear weight in it, and seems OK otherwise, maybe she has sprained something, or the cut is painful from a bruise, as you say. If you don't want to take her to the vet to have it looked at, you could observe her for a few days and see how she gets on. Try to keep her fairly well enclosed so she doesn't have to run about too much, and perhaps try to get her to avoid jumping up and down on to perches for a while of you can arrange things like this.

Hi thanks for the reply. I live in France near a farm that transports chickens at point of lay and also for slaughter (at only a year old) and they often get out, these fell off the lorry as the driver went too fast round a corner. They didnt want them back, There were 5 others, but I have rehomed them as I am up to capacity in out coop. This is the first injured one I have come across. She is coming out and moving around a bit so I am hopeful she will do ok. I will give her a couple more days then take her to a vet if needed. Thanks

I also have put her and the other one in small coop with tiny run, to acclimatise them here before introducing them to the rest of my girls. Also I want the legs cut to heal up before putting her with the rest because of bullying. Cheers for the advice im quite new to chicken keeping but have 4other rescues who have come back to good health so hopefully im doing ok.
