Lame Hen

Hi all, Well we have a lame hen, she's about 9-10 weeks old and has a curled up foot as if its spasmed? :? This started yesterday morning when we noticed she was toppling over, we watched her for an hour or so but by this point the cocks had started to pin her down by her neck! :shock: Took her out and have housed her inside our house in a dog crate. She doesn't seem to be eating and is hardly drinking but seems happy in a way?? :| . I'm keeping a close eye on her but have you any ideas on this situation or do you think she just won't get better? Any advice is much apreciated.

Hi, are there any injuries on the foot/leg that you can see?
She might have knocked it jumping down from somewhere or perhaps the cocks have ganged up on her?
If it's no better after a few days rest then a vet trip might be best- any other symptons?

Thanks for you reply David, Bad news is that now both legs have curled up and she's just sat, she can't stand at all and when I opened the cage she just started rolling around trying to get away from me and screaming I can't take her to the vets as I'm skint till Monday now.... I'm so annoyed that I can't help her. She's becoming worse and I have no idea what to do. There's no cuts or damage or anything like that but like I said both legs have now gone? What can I do for her?

Hi Natalie,

I feel sure that if you contacted your local vet and explained you could pay next week for treatment, they would be more than happy to take a look at your hen. I have done this in the past with my rabbit, I was given over a week to settle the bill. They are after all dedicated to the welfare of animals.

She sounds in a bad way- and there nothing worse than standing by and watching!!

hi, sorry to hear she is worse -it could be mareks- you really need to see a vet- or if she is suffering put her to sleep- good luck and let us know how she goes
