Hello!

I'm looking for some advise please, I picke up my girls 3 weeks ago.. 2 17 week old brown hens (not sure what they are called) and 2 4 year old buff Orpingtons.

They have a great coop and run but are in the garden all day. The coop is cleaned out 3 times a week.

Can someone please advise me what i should be giving my girls to keep them healthy, also one of Orpingtons has a cough so any suggestions would be great.

Thank you

My top products are:

Apple Cider Vinegar - loads of benefits, see our FAQ or ACV article

Garlic - I like using this fresh / crushed into food or water if my birds are a bit run down- as I'm sure you know there are many good immune boosting properties for people and the same applies for chooks

Diatoms - Great for helping reduce worms when given in food and good for dusting birds to help with Lice and even better for dusting in the house to stop / reduce Red Mites. See Diatom article for more information

The top two cost very little the third one a little more but used gradually I have found them to work well and have saved me a lot of problems.

Ultimately, the cheapest health trick for your birds is free ranging! If you can let your birds free range as much as possible, they will be far healthier (and I believe happier) as they will pick up all sorts of things from their environment that they need.

I use what Tom is suggesting too and my gals are pretty healthy.

I try to avoid medication when possible - but if you keep your birds in good condition, they won't get sick much anyway unless it's something really serious. Birds that are kept in small cages / runs tend to go ill quite quickly.
