Can anyone answer this question for me please about heights.

I know that having a perch too high in the coup (thus making the chooks jump down) is not good for them & can lead to bumble foot, but I was wondering if the same thing applies to outdoor perches, logs, tables etc? Its just that with the ground now being so hard, when my girls fly down from the various things around the pen, they do seem to land with a bit of a bump. I'm talking about approx 30"max. They only get up on these various things to get at tasty leaves (or me if they think I've got something better!) their outdoor perch is only about 18" high. Their wings haven't been clipped in case this makes any difference.

Thanks everyone, I'm sure someone will have the answer as I don't want to be responsible for broken legs. :?

Hello, if they can fly up, then they can fly down- and 30 inches is nothing- as to the theory about too high perches causing bumblefoot- unless they cut or puncture their feet/legs- they can't get bumblefoot- it is caused by bacteria ( normally staphylococcus bacteria) entering a wound )
Large, heavy birds can cause some damage/sprains when landing from great heights but a normal chicken- or one which can get up there without much effort can get down ok. My coronation and light sussex sleep about 5 foot from the ground- and come down with no problems.
regards, David :)
