suddenly mating daily?
I have a pair of call ducks, show birds; a gift from a long distance friend. They are housed with my runner ducks and geese at night, but in a seperate crate both to keep them safe from my goose and to keep the call drake from fighting with the runner drake (the call is dominant). The runners and geese free range in our fenced yard (1 acre) for most of the day, while the calls are in a tractor within the yard (again for safety and to prevent fights). Everybody free ranges together over several acres under supervision in the evenings.
The usual morning routine is that the calls go directly to the big pools, the ones intended for the geese and ducks, first thing when let out. They spend about half an hour there before going to their tractor. They have another pool in their tractor.
For the last week, my call hen has been insistent about being mated first thing every morning. My call drake, being an agreeable little guy, obliges her.
Calls are supposed to be seasonal breeders and layers. It's November and fairly cold here with our nights dipping into the 20°F range and we're lucky to see 50°F during the day.
Why has my little call hen decided now is the perfect breeding time? Any guesses?
