Ist egg of the year ( and another but broken?)

Well I am delighted to find an egg this morning but equally confused to find a 2nd one that has been broken/or eaten? Of course the coop is in chaos with the two new girls so i'm not sure who has laid and why the egg was broken...maybe because the nesting boxes were blocked off? But then again if i don't block them, some dear hen roosts in it! 19 I'm not sure what to do!

yeh first eggy , well done to who laided it :lol: mine have totally slowed down only get 2 or 3 a day out of approx 18 layers normally they pick up about now .

Fuzzyfelt: when your girls have laid their eggs for the day, if you can put a large flower pot or similar into the nest box, so there's not enough room to get in there to sleep, the girls will have no option but to sleep in the coop. You can then take the flower pot back out again any time after they've gone to sleep & before you do. Then the nestbox is available (and poo-free) for them to lay in the next day.

This was suggested to me here on the board, & it's worked a treat. On the odd occasion when I haven't put the flowerpot in, if Duracell goes to bed in the nestbox, she gets gently ushered back into the coop by the flowerpot being put into the nestbox from the outside
