It seems like just when a thread starts to get popular, amusing, and off topic it gets put here and no one posts in it anymore. Do people just not look at it because it's all the way at the bottom of the Board Index? Or do people not know it's down here?? Usually the 'general chatter' forums are the most popular on boards, but I have to say most of them are at the top of the Board Index in my experience. :D

Bit like the elephants grave yard

I just click on new posts and read the ones that look interesting, dosent matter what section its in.

only problem with that though is the moderator cuts posts out of popular threads and moves them here so they don't show up as new posts. So just as a thread is getting exciting it gets cut off and sent to the naughty corner never to be viewed again! I'd be willing to bet that the majority of the high view posts on this general chatter forum were once in a topic area and then moved. the ones posted here are the ones with less than 20 views... :-)12

Think you've hit the nail on the bonce then, once I've looked at the new threads I would'nt then go looking down here and I would think most peeps would do the same.

Just going to have a look through here now, see what i've missed.

There are some good jokes ccm. Last one I read had me in stitches.

Think General Chickens contains a lot of Chickens Heath issues but does it really matter as long as the posts are answered?

exactly, if the post has been answered surely a little off topic or even on topic! healthy banter is needed to keep the moral of the forum up? instead it's frowned upon and moved... :-)02

Whoa Bertie!...... Lot of assumptions there. Let me clear some of those up for you.

The moderators rarely split threads...sometimes a poster may ask a question inadvertently in a thread not relevant to the thread title, in this case the thread would be "split" to ensure the question doesn't get "overlooked." This means that the question within it's own thread is more likely to get some support and therefore attract helpful replies from other members. In addtion this also allows the various search engines to pick up the subject and also signposts people in the right direction when using the site search facilty, or simply viewing the thread heading in the various forum boards available.

Posts are not moved because of low posts or views, the forum doesn't work like that, also we do not operate a "naughty corner."

Some tips: When you are logged in at the top you will see more functionality then logged off and viewing the forum as a guest. You will see "new posts" click on this option and you will be able to view all new posts since last visit.

Other options (when logged in..)

View unanswered posts • View unread posts • View new posts • View active topics Mark forums read

Hope this helps.

Whoa there Foxy!<not being condescending> ;) I think you're the only one assuming and I was speculating. but cheers for trying to 'clear' things up i guess?

Posts are not moved because of low posts or views, the forum doesn't work like that, also we do not operate a "naughty corner."

Not really sure what you're on about here?? The "naughty corner" was in jest...no one said anything about posts being moved because they had low views or posts...
I said that the majority of the posts in this section were of low views and the ones that had high views were probably not born here and moved from another topic area when it went 'off topic'.

as for the tips, i'm sure they will be very helpful to some that may not be familiar with using forums. i'm ok though thanks! i don't generally access the forum unless i'm logged in. believe it or not, i'm a moderator on another forum :)

my issue(not a massive big deal, just creating constructive conversation) just happened to be with the recent move of the jokes and humor on the threads that had their questions answered already.
<warning metaphor>
it kind of felt like you came in and picked up the game off the table and put it out in the barn while it was raining outside. we were all warm inside the house, happily playing the game where we were and didn't want to go all the way to the barn to play the game. so the game was forgotten or people came back from the loo and didn't know what happened or where it went...
</end metaphor>

There are only a few things we move / delete really:

-Topics are moved to the most appropriate section - to keep things tidy. If you see one in the wrong place, please report it - Click the little triangle with the '!' on it. :-)17

-Threads that go off on a tangent may be split - this is on a case by case basis and doesn't happen that often. The most likely time this will happen is if someone goes off on a rant (e.g as can happen with killing fox or birds) and they are not being insulting to others but hi-jacks the original post due to the strong for / against views. In this example, I would move the rant part of it into general chatter and link to it from the original post - that way both parties can have their respective threads... and views. :-)05

-Spam is deleted - and the user - no questions asked! :-)08

-Posts that break our rules, (eg are disrespectful or insulting or cause users to report the thread) will sometimes be removed although this is rare. ;)

The General Chatter is at the bottom because it's not the main focus of this forum.

We try to get the balance right - and I'm always open to suggestions. We're planning on introducing a few more areas soon - Recipes, Chicken Housing and Runs and sorting out the 'Breed of the month' that died a death, replacing it with individual pure breed forums and information.

There are 2 new moderators joining us soon that will help spread the work load a little more as well.

It is not easy to keep everyone happy all of the time but we are volunteers that between us spend many hours a week either visibly moderating or (as is more the case for me) on the back end sorting out the servers / software and databases that are required to work to bring us this forum.

I hope this helps clarify a few things to everyone. :-)99

Had a look through this section and could'nt see many posts unanswered, in fact no more than in any other section.

I like this forum, its easy to use, a big plus at my age :-)10 and dose not appear to be heavily moderated, unlike one other I frequent but that's good in its own right.

So from me, keep up the good work the poultry keeper team, I'm more than happy with your efforts and I do know what a frustrating job it can be at times :-)07

Agreed! I like the forum a lot, other wise I wouldn't be here!! LOL  I was just making some speculation as to how things worked and why, what not... :-)19 I know a lot of forums have their general chatter at the top. So i was just curious why you chose to put it at the bottom and what people thought about it etc. i like learning the logistics about stuff i guess!

i thought Foxy was right to move the posts. The thread was an interesting one, arising from a genuine question which was attracting a lot of useful and helpful input, but it had been hijacked by a long string of irrelevant 'jokes' that took it right off topic and in themselves effectively closed down discussion. We weren't all 'happily playing the game where we were' - and 'the barn' was in any case only a click or two away, down in this section, not 'in the rain outside'.

Most forums do have a section for jokes and banter, and those who are familiar with using them will know where to find them, and that they can be useful and funny. But other parts of the forum are for talking about keeping poultry, that's our common interest and the reason we come on here, and it can get irritating when people go too far off topic, or post exchanges that would perhaps be best sent as personal messages. It's a bit like talking on your mobile in a crowded train carriage - those not involved can get annoyed and feel excluded and just switch off.

i guess i'll go perch over here...

and not being funny Marigold but Tim answered the question perfectly fine and had moved over the rest of the thread. is there any particular reason you felt you needed go back to defend Foxy(when btw Foxy didn't need defending) and basically hen peck me out of the bunch assuming that everyone of the forum felt as you did about the whole friendly banter and having a laugh, for once... ? that no one was put off about having friendly giggles and humor moved away? because maybe it's just me, but the jokes stopped and the banter stopped once it was moved, where as if it had stayed there I wonder how long it would have gone on for? Just curious.

Bertie - I don't want to spend my time reading any more posts like the one above that stir people up to get a reaction so I am locking this topic now.

I have had a belly full of this kind of talk and my patience is slowly being lost. I have given you the benefit of the doubt more than once. This really is the last chance.

PLEASE! Bertie, just let the moderators do their job. If they want to split a topic or move a topic, they are doing it for a reason and have the power to do it. Nearly 2500 members and I only get complaints from one person about the way the forum is run....

I put complete trust in the mods and they are capable of using their judgement to intervene as necessary. If you don't like it - whilst I value you as a member of our community here - I am sorry, you will have to find another forum that runs the way you want it to.

Please Bertie. You have 200 or so posts here and most of those are fine.... you're a knowledgable member of our community and I want you to be a part of our forum but you must not keep posting reactionary comments or questions like this all the time.
