Last night on putting my chooks to bed I noticed that one was huddled up next to the fence. She had been perfectly fine minutes before so I was concerned what could have caused her to stand still and fluff her feathers out and look very unwell. By now the other chooks had come back out of the coop but ignored her. Then her wings started to drop and I thought she was going to keel over! Then she laid an egg right in front of me!! I was both surprised and relieved as she became completely normal again! :o The egg must have dropped about 3-4ins (as she wasnt in the normal laying position) onto the pebbles but wasnt even cracked and was completely normal !

Do chooks lay that late in the evening - it was around 8.40pm ish? Normally my girls finish laying by mid afternoon.

No, it's not really normal behaviour
They will usually lay later and later until they skip a day. It's not really anything to worry about though.

Thanks Tim for putting my mind at rest - it really did throw me as it was the last thing I thought would happen - I'm just glad it wasnt anything horrible. Today she is enjoying the day with the rest of the girls. I was just curious really.
