My bantum is keeping me on my toes....she has bright red comb, goes in and out the nest, squawking like she is about to lay......but nothing!!

This has been going on for weeks, and still nothing. I have checked her vent nothing is stuck or even looks like its coming. So I'm thinking she just does want to lay.

Any ideas or do resign to a chicken that doesn't lay??

There is such a thing as a hen that won't or hardly lays. As with all animals, some are born with incorrect/missing or Malformed reproductive apparatus, so are incapable of producing eggs, although it is relatively uncommon.

Too many about that are very poor layers now due to indiscriminate breeding.

Any chance she is stealing (hiding) a nest and laying there out in the garden. Look in all the nooks and crannies , clumps of grass etc. Many bantams love to do this, then go broody and sit on them.

She has come from a reputable breeder,so she is ok in that aspect. She isn't laying anywhere else, I keep checking, she does go in and sit in the nest box but nothing. The other bantum of the same age is laying. So I'm stumped!! Short of squeezing her till it pops out I'm out of ideas??!!

They are Sablepoots or booted bantams whichever way they are called these days..hehe.

They will be coming up for a year old now Marigold.
