That's one fat chook Shirley! Our cockerels can all count to three or four and can tell if one hen is missing. More than that and they don't notice one going to the nest box.
 
Ah but if you watch it closely the bird starts looking for the reward as soon as she has pecked the correct number of times.

To do the test more convincingly, the tester would have to be unable to see the number on the card and the bird would need to be given the same length of time after apparently finishing her pecking (at least 3-4 seconds clear) before being given a verbal clue or a treat.
 
Still great to watch though. You should see our Botty eying up my baguette to see what's worth pinching -he can count the pips in the tomatoes !
 
Well, I thought it was entertaining. I don't suppose for a moment that this was intended to be scientific.

I may give it a go on a warm, balmy summer evening when I'm bored. ;)
