identifying feather-legged birds

I just wonder if anyone has thought of a way of identifying birds with feathered legs as a ring wouldn't work? I'm keen to remember exactly how each bird was bred. I wonder if a cable tie might work.

A bit pricey but microchipping would do the trick.
