Hi guys, wondering if anybody could help. The school I work at had bought and incubated some eggs and gave them to me when they were 2 weeks old. They had no idea what they had bought, they just wanted to study the process of hatching and then they ask me to take them off their hands, which I gladly did. I was just wondering if anybody could identify which breed they are from my rather poor photographs (sorry, hope you can see them as well, have been trying to load them on for several hours with little success!) Also, how long until I will be able to tell whether they are male or female? They are 6 weeks old now. Many thanks in anticipation.

I thought what lovely girls especially No. 1, what pretty plumage.
Then I thought two of them have large wattles and comb - usually boys, but my experience is that the boys' wattles and combs go red very quickly, and at the moment I have three hybrid chicks, less than 5 weeks, and the two little boys' wattles have been red for about 2.5 weeks, so I'm guessing all yours are girls.
No idea what their breed is though, but lucky you, lovely - lets hope, girls.

Hi ajmellu, on first look I would say that number 3 is a boy, that is a very large comb he is sporting for 6 weeks old, number one is likely a girl and number 2 could go either way but I would lean towards boy. They are probably crosses though it is difficult to tell at 6 weeks when their plumage is all over the place.

Very pretty chicks, as Val says, but unless the school knew what they were buying its likely they are some sort of crossbreeds probably sold on eBay just as 'hatching eggs' especially as they're such a mixed bunch. Nothing wrong with that, unless you wanted to breed or show them, and we shall all enjoy playing guess the pedigree when they're a bit older!

Thanks for the help guys, that's greats was hoping they were all going to be girls to be honest. My next door neighbours are not the easiest to like and they are not overly happy that we have chickens ( doesn't stop them taking my eggs though when I offer them to keep them sweet!) I know that they would be very unhappy if they were having to listen to a cockerel making noise very early in the morning and would probably complain to the council! I love all of them but if I had to pick a favourite I think the middle one is, so really hoping that one is a girl! No problems on the identification, was hoping for some rare breed or super bantam, but think they look great whatever they are!

No' 3 looks to have some cream legbar genes, judging by the plumage on the head & the back. Any idea what colour of egg it hatched from?

Sorry, no idea what colour egg they came from, they were in a different class to me and only found out when they were already hatched and when I asked the staff they had no idea either! Sorry!
