Here are my 2 Buffs. They were bought on the same day from the same place. They are 7 weeks old and they were both supposed to be female. Again, I feel stupid for asking, but, I am still kinda new at raising chickens and I would like the opinion of some "Seasoned" Chicken people. Do I have 2 Females or 1 male and 1 female?
Thanks,
Wrigley

none expert here, however if they are supposed to be the same age, the difference in comb and wattles to me would suggest one male and one female. Someone knowlegable will be along soon

Im going for 1 male, 1 female. Some of my hens have very large combs though compared to others. The male should have a slightly different body shape aswell.

I agree, boy on right and girl on left, assuming same age.

A photo of them together would help, a cockerel would have slightly thicker legs and maybe more angular at this stage in the body.

Aren't they lovely! Orpingtons are a delight. Until they change into a cockerel at the last minute! Sorry to worry you Wrigley but we had a pair in one pen that looked just the same at 7 weeks. Both from the same parents and very close amongst Wyandottes, so we kept them together in the Hens pen. At 20 weeks the cockerel started causing 'problems' so he had to be separated. At 26 weeks and two days the hen came out one morning, stood upright and coughed (just the same as dad, but a day later) so we knew what 'she' was. Within a few days his comb and wattles had doubled in size and he was moved to join his brother. Basil is lovely and now has his own flock to look after.

So at the moment Wrigley you have an early developing cockerel and either a hen, or a late developing cockerel.

Hey everybody, thanks for all of the educated opinions :-)17 .

Foxy, the second picture has both of them together and you can see their legs and feet and you are right, one has thin legs and feet and the other has thick legs and feet. The body on the one on the right is bigger and fluffier.

Val, I can have cockerels, it's just I wasn't planning on it. I told all my neighbors that I was getting chickens and I assured them that I didn't plan on having any roosters. I look at it this way, they all have dogs that bark at all hours of the day and night, so, gome on!

Chris, I really didn't need to hear that ;)if they end up both being males I'll probably keep one and look for a home for the other. I really like the way the buffs look, they are a beautiful bird.

Bex, the one on the right is bigger and fluffier "he" looks like a "wedge".

Again, thanks to you all. I'll keep you updated.

Have just pulled the picture down and you can see the legs. I would say one of each looking at them. I have a cockerel and neighbours quite close they also have constantly barking dogs. OH did ask if the chickens bothered them and they said no so all good. With my little boy I keep him in the dark until 7.30 on a week day and until 8.30-9 on a weekend so they have no justification to complain. I do believe some of the noisier boys still crow even in the dark so keeping my fingers crossed you have a quite boy. I do give my surplus eggs to my neighbours so that always helps.

Deff. look like one boy one girl to me - very smart birds though!!! :D

Thanks everybody, that's what I'm going with, one boy and one girl. I'm ok with that.
They are smart, even for only being seven weeks old. And theyt are BEAUTIFUL! I would love to see a flock of 20.

Val; mine are out every morning at 5AM :-)12 Giving the neighbors some eggs....Great Idea.
