Hi.
I have just got some Marans, point of lay (24 weeks). Can anyone advise me of how much feed each hen should get per day please ? :-)09

each bird is different on the amount of feed they eat your best thing to do is buy one of those hanging plastic feeders you fill them to the top and just let the birds pick at the food as and when they want to , how many birds have you got ?

My hens eat more in the winter, I keep a feeder topped up with food so that eat when they want to, I also give them a wet layers meal which they really enjoy.

Thanks ,
Its a wet meal I am feeding, twice a day, about 6oz dry each, split into the two feeds, is that about right ?

I did read somewhere that 100 - 120g layers pellets or mash per bird per day is a rough guide, but personally, I put a couple of hoppers out with layers pellets in, and also regularly give them cooked and raw veg & peelings, cooked pasta and rice etc and then a handful or two of mixed corn in the afternoon. On the days that they get the pasta etc, they don't eat so many layers pellets. If the hopper's empty, they soon let me know!

Thanks for the help everyone, I will keep going with the 6oz and give some extra veg plus scratch corn and see how we go.

Hi Zippy

can you do something for me.... and tell us when your point-of-lay Marans start to lay?!
ours are a little older than yours (at 26 week you said) and despite weeks of lovely red combs, seem to have decided that Winter is not laying time!

So dont be disappointed if you too have to wait til Spring! :)

Will do Blue, strange though, I have some young Bresse Gauloise (black) about 26 weeks old and they have started laying ;)

My cuckoo marans started laying a month ago at 22 weeks, ours have layers ad=lib & handful of corn in the afternoon.

Right.... my girls will be read the riot act tomorrow!!
mind you, the two light sussex they were hatched with arent laying either .... the 3 foot of snow won't be helping though

Hi Blue - My youngest Marans to start laying this autumn was just over 18 weeks so they can lay early if they want to. Its best to choose birds from a utility rather than show breed if you are looking to get some eggs, as the show birds are bred more for their size a feather colours, and the colour of eggs they produce as well as the size and quantity can be disappointing. So go for a pure bred but from a utility strain and you shouldn't be disappointed.

All the best
Sue
