Hi
I know i had to top up the water early hrs this morn was late day 20 so checked the 2 eggs and both were alive and had broken through the air sack membrane. They were moving yet the shells are still in tact and i cant here any noise. Is this normal or not. just a little worried.

I don’t really know how long it takes to hatch once they have broken through the air sac, but probably about 24 to 48 hours.

The incubator should not be opened once it is in lockdown as it affects the humidity and the chances of the eggs hatching. After the 17th day you just need to be patient, sit on your hands and hope. That is what I do.

Good luck with the hatch.

Thank you 3441sussex
the only reason i checked is that i had not seen any movement and the other 4 eggs 3 were just cloudy and 1 seems to have died as it isnt fully formed. So i thought the remaining 2 had died as well. I am new to this and thus far i haven't got to this stage with live embryo's.

Can take up to 24 hours from pipping, that's breaking the shell for an air hole, to hatching. There is a bit of a debate between poultry keepers as to whether they should be assisted or not. That act in itself can injure a healthy chick and therefore kill it. Be patient Jan. We switched off the incubator at day 24 because the last hadn't hatched. I broke the egg to see what had happened and the fragments of shell cut through the chick and it died in my hands -won't ever do that again!

Thanks Chrismahon
Just checked now and i can hear one chick peeping, so will leave well alone. Its just hard when you have never had a successful hatch. I will be over the moon if i hatch 2 out of 6 considering they were 2 days in the post.

I do hope you get two. Otherwise you will have the dilemma Chickenfan faced earlier, with just one urgently needing a companion. That exercise went horribly wrong unfortunately, as I am sure will be explained if you do end up in that position.

Hi Chrismahon
Not heard any peeping for a while and still no hole in the shell. Is this normal? As i have nothing to compare to.

They may be dead Jan, but if I remember correctly ours go quiet before they hatch. Perhaps they are saving their energy and concentrating on the manoeuvre to get their head out from under the wing to reach the shell? You said the air sac was fine and everything is set correctly (heat 37.0 degrees, humidity around 75%) so it's just a case of waiting.

Hi Chrismahon
Just letting you know woke up to find a healthy baby Faverolle chick alive and well in the incubator. The other egg i haven't heard anything yet. So thanks so very much for all your support.
