What happens at a show? do judges just look, or do they hold the birds?.
Please can you give me some tips for showing my birds.
Thanks :D

what happens you put the birds in the cage in the morning, then you are asked to leave the hall or the tent, while the judge looks at the bird, it is a poultry club rule, that they have to look and handle the birds. Then you can come back in to the venue and feed and water your birds.

PUT NO FOOD OR WATER IN AT THE START OF THE SHOW

Howdy,

I'm no expert but here is some advice that I have heard:
1. Bath your chicken in warm water and use baby shampoo to wash it (try not to get the baby shampoo near your chickens eyes)
2. Then rinse your chicken off with lemon juice and water (lemon juice helps their feathers shine)
3. Then dry your chicken off with a towel or blow dryer (and also preen their feathers with you fingers in an orderly way)
4. Then rub Canola oil and rosemary on their legs to kill mites and pests (also to make them shine)
5. Last of all Keep them in a cool clean place until the show

I hope this advice helps! :-)17

Showing your birds means a lot more than last min work.. its the way you keep them, feed them etc and you have to have a bird to standard to begin with.. washing and blow drying isn't difficult - but the months before - feeding etc is...........I'm only beginning to win some prizes - if I can help you - give me a shout - and I'll put you in contact with people that can really help you

You will need to select what breed you want to show and compare yours to the breed standards to see if they have a chance of placing. You can always post photos on forums and ask for an honest opinion.

Dorinda is right, they will need high quality feed, any hens keeping away from cockerels before showing to keep them in better condition etc.
Maybe go and have a look at some shows first before entering - you could always start with entering eggs to see how that works :)
