:?: Hi I'm a newbie living on Canvey Island my son bought home two chicks thinking that in about 16 weeks it will help me as I'm on Income support. but looking at my house deeds it says I cant keep chickens does anyone know why this is and is there anyway round it my home was built in the 1950's.

thankyou for any info you can give

Hi Joylee.

Umm tricky one. If the deeds say you can't keep chickens, the only way around this in my mind would be to contact the local authority to request an exception under the condition you don't disturb anyone... but I also think you'll just get a refusal.

The other option is perhaps to keep them, keep them clean and keep them quiet but there's always going to be the day you might have to get rid of them if you get found out.

As for helping you out, unfortunately it's almost impossible to make chickens pay their way in comparison to the shop prices of commercially produced eggs these days.... take a look at your local feed prices and work out how many eggs you're likely to get over the year. It will no doubt look quite expensive before you even look into medications or bedding / housing.

Sorry I'm not giving you much good news here am I

Hi

I am a newb too but did lots of reading before I got my flock. I am a believer that a mans/womans home is their castle and people should mind their own business. If your house is individual rather than part of a developement then neighbours won't know for sure if you have a covenant.

My chickens are less smelly than rabits and make less noise than our dog and cats and our 5 children.

You can't compare the costs for the eggs alone but when you figure in that they help rid your garden of pests and fertilize it, we now grow a few potatoes, rhubarb, runner beans and peas. I also planted some herbs spesifically for the birds but they don't like them. I am spending more time in the garden and so are the children and strangely enough I can always rely on someone to help me clean them out or watch them when free ranging round the garden or collecting the eggs it is early days but everyone in the family seems to want to be involved, even my garden hating husband has been doing those jobs that have needed to be done for months, so I'd say go for it.

:( Thankyou Tim and Ali

Had a go at my son I know his heart was in the right place but he should have looked into it a bit more, as neither him or me can afford all the extras expense the feed isnt a problem but everything else is, plus we have enough foxes round here as it is, and I have 5 cats so they couldnt just be free range, I also have a dog a border collie which I must say is good with the chicks.

Ali that was his idea as well as regards growing veg, I think he feels its about time I started eating more of the 5 aday.

Found out it is a legal thing and nothing to do with the local council, I will be keeping them here till they are a little bit older and then my sons boss will have them where he has alot roaming around in a very huge pen.

Thankyou for your help

My old house deeds said no chickens but the land was a chicken farm years ago thats why. My place now says no pigs same reason.
Chickens now are been kept as pets say 3 and it is fine as long as you dont have 50 plus the gove dont want to know. yes if you have a cock it gets into the noise thing with neighbroughs but hens are fine.
hens years ago were kept to eat the left overs from the table this was normal and to see mine with spag boll is something they love it. Now gove say they should not eat animal products they try to tell you they are vedge's no they are not go in the run with red nailvarnish on your toes and find out they go for blood on cuts and grases as well.
As for meds well rhubarb leaves are a very good wormer and the hens love them. a dust bath witch they do natural on soil removes the lice. crushed garlic clove in drinking water repels bugs on the skin also is good for them as well is a chopped up onion once a week is fine. there are lots more basic remidies some legal some not. But all what old timers give there hens.
Ok I use straw in nest boxes but shredded paper works well ( so if you know peps who shred there personal letters thats fine) you can use newspapers on the floor of the hen house and watch them shreed it great fun just means you clean it when its dirty.
the only thing they need is fresh water daily and some food both you need containers but I still have a icecreed tub for water in one run and a china large bowl for the food both easy to clean.
mine love the weeds from the garden also the lawn clippings neighbroughs give me theres as well and lottie there poo goes to lottie. or you can put it in a compost bin or black bin.
think I had beter finish before this get into a book.
Hens can be kept on a budget and keep away from vets as I have found they dont know a great deal and cost a fortune been there and done that sorry to the good vets out there.
