Hello everyone have you missed me?
I've been in St George's hospital in London with a very nasty broken leg for 3 weeks and just been discharged.
Fell down 3 stairs at home which resulted in both tibia and fibia broken, and bells and whistles to Frimley Park, then on, to London for plastics and orthopaedics, resulting in a long stay and a knee to ankle permanent pin.
Hope all is well with you all.
My family completed the hatching of some mixed bantams, which I have not seen yet.
As I am confined indoors I will try to get grips with posting pics on this site.
 
Oh no! That sounds awful.
Did you slip off the edge of a step on the way down? Ive done that a couple of times in socks but very luckily got away with bruises. Or do you mean 3 flights?!
 
Oh poor you! Hope it's not too painful by now. Are you mobile yet? Staying indoors is a good thing while there's still a chance of frost and ice - you don't wan tot break the other one!
 
Oh dear, Val, so sorry to hear that. We certainly have been missing you. I've been wondering why you hadn't been posting news about your quail hatch - did you set the eggs before you had your accident?
Do you live on your own? If so, it must have been difficult to ring for help, unless you keep a phone with you at all times. It sounds like a really conclusive break, and they don't keep you in hospital for 3 weeks for nothing nowadays. I'm glad you have family nearby enough to help with the chickens, I know they will have been your first concern, especially in the snowy weather.
Do take care of yourself - do you think it'll be very long before you can walk and get out of doors to see those little bantam chicks? If you use a phone as a camera, you might consider downloading the Tapatalk app, which lets you post a link to your pics directly from your Camera Roll into the text of your message on this forum. You just put the cursor where you want the photo in your message, then click on the Attachment symbol (the paperclip) at the bottom, and then when the photo library appears, click on the one you want and click Done. My new pullets have been using it to post their selfies now they've registered on here. Just get the app, then choose Poultrykeeper Forum and go from there.
 
Thanks for replies. 3 stairs and luckily (or not) at the bottom of the staircase, anyway, very, very nasty and still extremely painful, but have crutches.
Decided to turn off the quails as the bantams had hatched, and hatch quails later.
I've had hens in the past from Simon and had really nice girls and I like him and his set up, he seems to be a really good poultry keeper.
All I can do is hobble to the window and look down the garden to the girls, there is now a pigeon caught somehow in the run, but I cannot do much about it!
I will come to you, Marigold, for advice when I do buy some quail eggs.
Re. Chalk hill I sent for some eggs about 2 years ago, and my experience with them was to warn people off, but out of respect to you as you have always praised them, I could not do so publicly. The eggs were very expensive, very filthy and totally rotten. 1 out of 12 hatched, a beautiful boy
Brahma and the rest just stank the house out for days.
 
So sorry to hear about your leg. It's a real worry, if you're on your own, having something like that happen. My neighbour is always warning me to keep my phone on me all the time, just in case.

Hope everything heals up cleanly and well, and you'll be on both feet again by the time better weather comes along.
 
Sorry to hear about your experience with the eggs from Chalk Hill. I' never had eggs from them, most of my purchases have been home-bred pullets ranging on lovely green paddocks, but I did get two chicks once and they were being kept in very good clean conditions. I hope you complained about the eggs, and there was no need to worry about what I or anybody else thought, it's good to know these things, that's what the forum is for.
 
Glad you are on the mend, that sounded really nasty and painful. Just take it slowly and steadily. Glad to have you back posting
 
Poor Val :( hope you heal up as quickly as possible. Did my tib and fib when I was 12 and had 6 temporary pins in it so you have my utmost sympathies, it hurt like hell. Just imagine what those arm muscles of yours will be like after a few weeks on crutches, no one will be messing with you.
 
How are you today, Val? Still peeping out of the pophole of your coop? Do you have any help in the house, apart from the people who are looking after your chickens? It must be very frustrating - and boring - especially now the weather is calling you out into the garden. Can you get out at all on your crutches? I expect the hens will think their humum has grown two new legs. I wish you lived near enough for me to visit you and be some use!
 
Sounds very painful Val and all too easily done. Had a friend who just slipped off the edge of the pavement- only 6". Her leg went completely black and she was in a support bandage for weeks. I fell backwards down a full flight of stairs once (because I slipped on the top one) and knocked myself out on the wall at the bottom- fortunately just a few bruises, but it could have been very serious. Hope you mend quickly.
 
Actually teetered on the back doorstep to shout encouragement to the girls, as they were going mad at one point yesterday morning. Have another fox visiting but he is not human friendly, one sight of me and he vanished - just as I like it. The girls were immediately calm and quiet and about their chickenly business. I think it is likely that they think I have been replaced by an alien, four legs, two of them shiny silver, a Christopher Robin dressing gown, they have never seen such things before.
 
I bet their chicken diaries would make fascinating reading with this strange alien on the back doorstep. Glad you are moving about a bit
