hi :) we have six hybrids had them for three years now they seem to have stopped laying :( hoping to get some advise cheers ian

Hi Ian,

Welcome to the forum.

It's getting to the time of year when they will stop laying as they will be coming into moult. If they aren't moulting, there are some other reasons why they might stop laying but first, let us know if you see feathers in their run and if they look a bit scraggy...

Cheers

Tim

hi Tim there are alot of feathers in there pen ,we are only getting 1 egg out of the 6 every two days .I was told it was because they are getting old,is this correct

Hi Ian,

No, at this time of year they will start to moult (lose and re-grow their feathers). Feathers are 80% protein and most of an egg is protein - so they stop laying eggs and put their efforts into regrowing feathers. As they get older, the moult takes longer but you should see feathers around the run and the hens will look scraggy, some might go bald in places and some can look 'oven ready' ! :o

Over the winter months, due to the decreased daylight hours, they are also likely to stop laying but they should start again in the Spring.

In general, they will lay 10% less eggs every year but it does vary.

Hi There,

Welcome to the forum.
I think a lot of us are in the same boat with the lack of eggs at this time of year. All of mine are going through their annual moult at the moment too. I'm lucky to get 3 eggs a day out of my 30 hens during the autumn.
I try to give them a bit of a boost by adding some cod liver oil to their feed and mineral supplements during moulting. This is a good time to think about worming them too.

Good luck.
