Hi All.
I`m fairly new to keeping poultry, and talk about it getting under your skin!
Well it all started the begining of Spring, when my Daughter was gifted an unsexed jap/dutch banty, then we bought a white Orpington to keep it company, two days later the Orpington came into lay and we were made up. But, her and the banty still seemed at odds. After a week of bickering about whos egg it was this morning, I decieded we needed more eggs, so I bought in 2 POL hybrids, a bluebell/haze, and a black sussex, but they seemed to be taking ages to come into lay. By now I`d made a 12x12x8 shed with a 12x14 run on the front, with 5 nest boxes inside on the walls. With the coop now sorted, I sat back and waited for my eggs, which didnt come because, the Orpington became broody and took the bantam under her wing. So then I started looking at pure breeds I liked, then came the incubator and 12 Cuckoo marans eggs. I had a great hatch consisting of 8 hens, 3 roo`s and an un fertile egg, so I was well pleased (and well hooked on chooks) Fast forward to present day and my urban small holding now consists of 1 Orpington hen, 2 Rhode Rock hens, a Blubell hen, a Black sussex hen, 6 Cuckoo hens and a roo, the original banty (which is a hen and now laying) 3 Turkeys- 2 Black and a Bronze, a trio of Serama and 4 Ross white table birds, not forgeting the chicks in the brooder, 3 serama and 2 partridge wyandotte bantams. We also have 4 ferrets, 2 terriers and a cat, plus the Mrs` veg patch. Now our friends have started calling us Tom n Barbera...
