Hello all, just signed up to the forum.
i've been interested in poultry for some time and i am finally going to do something about it :D
i hope to adopt some ex-battery hens from the BHWT,the main obstical i have is convincing Karen
that they are worth it :!: and our small garden/yard has enough room for a couple of hens,2 dogs and a pair of guinea pigs to run around in(not at the same time).i will also be doing things on a tight budget.

Hi Nigel,

Welcome to the forum :D .

Tell Karen from me that ex-batts from the BHWT is more than worth it.I've got eggs from mine daily, every single day.The eggs are also bigger than when I first got them, and I often can't close egg boxes properly because they are so big. They are always pleased to see you, and, you don't have to take them for a walk when it's raining.IMO,they are the best pets as they contribute cuteness, company and eggs.
I adopted four hens from BHWT last september and they were my first hens.I've also got dogs,7 dogs in fact.5 whippets and 2 terriers, all are keen hunters for birds and rabbits.
Getting ex-batts first was brilliant from this point of view, they don't realise that dogs or cats are possible predators,so don't run/flap away, raising the dogs hunting instincts. If the dogs go to close, they get pecked on their nose leathers.I think the hens think they are juicy slugs or something, but my dogs all respect ex-battery hens  .

Hi Nigel and a warm welcome.

I'm working on a new Ex-Bats section for release in the spring and the deeper I dig, the more hens I want to adopt!

They are very rewarding but you are right to look into it first, they are not without their little issues - but then no animal is completely trouble free ;)

I'm glad you are thinking of supporting the BHWT. There are also other small charities operating on a shoestring that you might want to consider too if you do go down this route.

Good luck and I look forward to meeting you in the forums!

Tim
