New member here. I have been keeping chickens for 6 +/- years now. Mostly a mixed flock. I don't breed or show or anything, the chickens are for my pleasure and for the eggs. They live in an outside coop, which has an enclosed run. They also free range. Until recently they have been free ranging most of the day. We live on 5 acres surrounded by neighbors who also have 5 - 10 acres. Many people in our neighborhood keep chickens.

I used to frequent poultry forums, but got out of the habit a few years ago. I am motivated to return because of a strange thing that happened, which is also the reason the chickens are being locked up earlier these days. (The whole story is in a post).

Other animals I keep are 2 box turtles, 2 water turtles (a slider and a cooter), 2 rabbits (a Dutch and a Holland lop). I had a duck, but he recently became a victim of a predator as did several of my hens. We had a wonderful Aussie who died of old age 1.5 years ago.

I am a retired teacher who went to nursing school and I now work part time in a nursing home which I love very much. 1 husband, 5 grown children, 5 grandkids.

Is that enough introduction? :-)07 Please find my post and let me know what you make of it.

My post is "A very strange event" posted in general chicken. Would love to hear theories! Thanks.

Hi Golfdiva, from another retired teacher here, and a big welcome to the forum. Although most of us on here are based in the UK we do have quite a few international members, including those from various parts of the USA. It's always interesting to find out how other people keep their chickens, and how they cope with various climates etc. You have a wonderful lot of space there - over here we often have to remind people to keep the numbers of hens down low enough to give them at least 2 sq. metres of run space each.
Thanks also for your Very Strange Event - I shall be interested in what theories people come up with.
