Hi, I'm Amanda and I'm getting chooks tomorrow!

Having spent the past couple of months researching / lurking on every poultry site I could find, I thought it was about time I signed up. I suspect that once I get the girls home the gaps in my research will appear and the panicky newbie questions will start :?

Hello, what chooks are you getting? always exciting getting your first....and second....and third....and fourth....(get my drift  )

Hi Amanda,

I can remember how excited I was about collecting my first four, they are the best pets(I've got dogs, rabbits, snakes, fish)and have also had gerbils, rats, mice, stick insects and at one time a lot more snakes.Chickens are definitely the best imo :D ,glad my dogs can't read this  .

I ask a lot of questions as well, and there are lots of friendly people on here with more experience who offer good advice.

just to be a nuisance, what breeds or hybrids are you getting and how many?????

Hi Amanda,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for joining us.

It's a fantastic hobby and I hope you have lots of fun with your chooks.

Tim

Thank you for the welcome :D

First post was a little short on detail, sorry – partly over-excitement, partly that I wasn’t sure what I’d end up bringing home! Ended up with a bit of a variety pack - a cuckoo maran, a black araucana cross, an ixworth, a double laced barnevelder, and a little crossbreed of uncertain parentage who was so friendly I had to have her!

So far (fingers crossed) things seem to be going well, although the girl who seems to be headed for lowest rank has lost a few tail feathers :( So.... first newbie question... will she stay that way until her next moult, or will losing them trigger regrowth?

My OH and I also have 5 rescued ex-racing greyhounds, 13 mice, an elderly runnybabbit, a gecko and 7 snakes - our house and garden are quite compartmentalised so nobody gets to eat anyone else!

Hi again Amanda,

You've got a lovely collection, and, your chooks sound lovely. As to the one who's lost a few tail feathers, they wont grow back until her next moult. Are they moulting at the moment? You'll soon realise if they are, they might have already moulted, but if not, they'll start soon.
Which greyhound rescue did/do you get your greys from?I used to have 2 ex-greys from G.R.W.E.and also used to foster for them, home check and fund raise.
Pip Singleton is also just up the road from me.
Anyway, enough about greys on a chook forum. You have chosen some lovely hens, very pretty and should get a lovely mix of eggs.Maybe you could post some pics for us :D .We er,like admiring chooks ;) .

Hi
