Help!!!!!

Hello Im new here and so glad Ive found you!!! :D

Ok heres my problem!

We have 3 rhode island reds all home bred, now the cockrel has what looks like eczema on his face? on closer look under his feathers they are all clotted together ( base of feather) and when he shakes its like a snow storm? very flaky.....I cant see anything move so really not sure what it is :( the local vet doesnt know and the local farmers just say get another one :o ....but he's our pet and they are only 8 months old! one of the other rhode islands has the startings of it but our 4th hen (different breed) is fine? HELP he seems so unhappy although he's eating well????
 
Isn't that just the sheaths of new feathers which are coming through ? As the new feathers break through, the protective sheath crumbles away giving the dandruff effect ! They vary a lot and some seen to manage new feathers with very little sheath.
 
I agree with chuck. You should see the mess around our pet cockerel Bottom. Bits all over the floor and we have to vaccumn constantly.

Is that why his face looks sort of dry/ scaly?
 
We find during the moult a dose of cod liver oil with multivitamins is helpful. He might have flaky skin because he lacks natuarl oils. Some of ours develop dry combs during the moult. One dose into the beak at the rate of 0.5mL per Kg bodyweight -so your average large cockerel about 2 mL. Use a syringe, with no needle obviously, and wash it out immediately in hot water with detergent as the oil swells the rubber plunger and it sticks if you don't.

Can you post a photo Liz? That might be useful in detirmining whether it is anything to worry about. Usually cockerels moult gradually, not as hard as hens.

Hi, welcome to the forum, agree, sounds like moulting, but it does sound like it could possibly be lice deposits, closer inspection will reveal.
