Hi there, I wonder if anyone can tell me the best way to deal with a horrific case of lice that I have only recently discovered in one of my chickens. She had been a bit quiet for some time, but was eating and drinking and laying fine, so I didn't take much notice. House is cleaned out weekly and dusted with red mite powder, so I was feeling reasonably confident that all was well. She then started getting very dirty vent feathers, but stupidly I didn't put two and two together and it was only about a month ago that I thought to have a good look at her.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Around the base of her vent feathers and below, were literally dozens of round balls of white eggs, all clustered to make each ball about 1cm in diameter. No wonder she was feeling off colour. There were also some yellowish/brown lice running around. I immediately gave her a bath and a liberal dusting of louse poweder, disinfected the house and dusted with louse and mite powder. I have today taken her to the vet and she had an injection of something to kill the live ones, and frontline spray to sort out the eggs. I guess I will also need to use the louse powder every few days in addition.

What I need to know is will the egg clusters drop off her or do I have to cut the feathers? She will be bald in that region if I cut them as there are literally dozens of these balls.

I feel so cross with myself for not having noticed before, but in the two years we have had chickens, this is the first problem we have encountered.

What is the best thing to do about the eggs and also is my louse powder ok - Gold Label? Thanks for any help!

Hi, the clusters are very, very, hard to remove- you will need to either cut them off or wait until she has her moult- if you cut them off she will be bald but the feathers will regrow. A dirty bottom is one sign of lice.
I would check for lice in 7 days time- but the injection will probably last up to six weeks so there shouldn't be any alive -even if the eggs hatch they will soon die. The powder will say on the tin/packet if it is safe for use on animals or only for the coop etc.
regards, David :)

Thanks David, it might be better to wait for the moult, she is in her second year and hasn't moulted yet, so I assume it is not far off. In the meantime, I will inspect as you suggest and keep a closer eye from hereon.

Thanks again. :)
