hi,

i have a chick hatched last night. its intestine is hanging out of its belly button. what should we do? i have tried gently pushing it back in but the hole is too small to get it all back in. it seems quite bright considering this. can it survive is it dries up and drops off or will it die?
any help would be great.

Hi HG--how horrid for you. If it is definately intestine ( Exompholos) it is due to a defect in the structure of the abdominal wall, sadly this will not 'repair' and is incompatible with life for a chick. The kindest thing is to cull it quickly before it gets infected and ill--which it will do quite fast. They can also get remmnants of yolk sacs which they can survive if they are small as they fall off. The difference should be clear as the intestine looks very different. Sorry! Ros

Hi thanks for such a quick reply.sadly the chick died a few hours later naturally. Not a nice thing to happen but we did get four other healthy chicks three of which are girls. They are cream legbars. Thanks for the help.
