I need some experienced advice..PLEASE.
I found our 22 month old Australorp yesterday with blood on her vent and no eggs etc in the box to provide explanation. I cleaned her up and left her out in the yard on a 70 degree day to prevent our other chicken from pecking at her bottom, and just because being out eating bugs seemed like good medicine.
That afternoon when I returned to check her she was sitting on the floor of the coop with a LARGE (8inch/20cm wide) watery membrane at the coop door. Pictures are below. It was a clear watery liquid inside a thin membrane with blood veining and an umbilical-ish cord. Very odd. Can't find anything like it anywhere. We have separated her to prevent pecking. This morning she is standing and alert, but we have lost 2 other birds to bloody vent issues (both bled after passing soft shelled eggs, one seemed to recover a bit but went quickly downhill after laying another egg 2 days later, the other just suffered a slow decline)
ANy thoughts or ideas? We can't find a good chicken vet here in Nashville. The one we did find just said to get the pot hot when you see blood at the rear.
They eat layer pellets and scratch feed, we give them steady access to both oyster shell and granite grit.
They do get out often and forage too, with occasional greens and fruit treats.
Let me know your thoughts please. I worry... we had 4 chickens 6 months ago and are now down to 2 with 1 bleeding. Could this be dietary or would it be genetic? we had 2 australorps and 2 Americana and now have 1 of each.
