Hi, Coronavirus gave me the incentive to take up chicken keeping again after a few years off. I’ve managed to get 7 utility light Sussex pullets. It seems to have cost a fortune setting up again but I didn’t have the time to build my own coop and run. Anyway I guess we all feel differently about food security now.

Eggs to date. 0 :-)07

Hi Wriggle and welcome to the Forum. You were very lucky to get 7 Light Sussex they're like gold dust at the moment as you know. Once they start laying you'll be getting 40+ per week so I hope you like eggs! do keep posting and let us know how it's going - with pics if possible.

Hello and welcome, I hope you enjoy being on the forum, it is a friendly place with plenty of experience. You were lucky to get utility LS, they must be pretty rare. I used to keep utility white sussex, but I'm not sure their egg laying abilities were much better than a regular strain, although they were economic to keep - they were very good foragers.

Thanks guys! We’re fortunate to have three great sets of neighbours who we do a bit of cooperative veg sharing with, very much dependent on germination rates and harvest gluts. Who knew you could make wine out of marrows! They have asked to purchase any surpluss eggs.

Its by far the best way, we used to do that. One of my neighbours grew asparagus so he was very popular! I used to give my eggs away, and sometimes they would come back in the shape of a cake! Bet you can't give the courgettes away though!

I think you can basically make wine out of anything. Whether you should, or would want to, is another issue! On my walks around home, I keep eyeing the gorse bushes speculatively. That wonderful coconut smell of gorse! I've been told that gorse wine is wonderful. But so far, I've not had the patience for picking the flowers. There's an awful lot of gorse blossoms in 1kg! But you never know. If this lockdown goes on long enough......!
