Hello all. I used to use the forum on Pekin Bantams to ask questions but it seems that that site has now gone. My wife and I are new to keeping chickens so have used the friendly folk on the forum for help and assistance. I've just stumbled on your web site so I hope you dont mind me asking you guys a couple of questions?

We have a pair of Partridge Cochins and we are hoping to breed from them. She hasn't gone broody yet and has recently had an infection in one of her feet and the vet gave her some antibiotics - pleased to say the infection has cleared up - but the vet said that we cant eat the eggs for 28 days. Would it be ok to collect her eggs and use them for breeding even if we shouldn't eat them?

As she hasn't gone broody, I bought an incubator and half a dozen eggs but they haven't hatched yet - incubation period is 21 days isnt it? They've been in for 21 days today - how long should I leave them?

Many thanks,

Hi Brahma,

Yes, a shame about Pekin Bantams - but at least this forum is picking up some of the old community and will hopefully grow into a useful resouce in time.. I know it has only been going for a week or so and already I see there are 87 or so members which is looking promising.

That does seem like a long withdrawal period :o - I don't know what you've got but usually for general antibiotics the vet will say 7 days. Something I have done in the past is called the manufacturer of the antibiotics and asked them. I did this with Tylan Soluble once and asked about the egg withdrawal period. They told me they hadn't had it licenced due to the costs involved so the 'standard' egg withdrawal period applied which was 7 days. The chap then went on to say it passed all of the tests and hopefully by the end of the year they would have it licenced for 0 days egg withdrawal but it did take a long time to get this approval.

I would follow your vets advice but try speaking to the manufacturer aswell as you may find you can reduce this time a little.

I wouldn't worry about hatching those eggs (personally) ... but If in doubt, go with what the vet says.

Good Luck

Rooster.
