as a new member on this site i would like to introduce myself i have been connected with poultry for a number of years as a hobby and also showing with some success in my local poultry club but owing to health problems had to stop showing but still keep birds.i keep pekin bantams indian runner ducks ,geese and indian game

Welcome to the forum Peter, so you keep runners too? Daft things aren't they? What colours do you keep? I have apricot, choc and mallard :)

A warm welcome Peter. Pleased you made it ;)

I used to keep Black and Chocolate Runners (hence the black runner in the poultrykeeper logo) before I had my big stock reduction a couple of years ago. I now only breed Abacot Ranger ducks, Copper Black Marans Chickens and have 2 Brecon Buff Geese coming later in the year.

davidd in answer to type of geese, roman a breeding trio three years old all that is left of seven after night time vist by people who wanted free christmas dinners

Hi peter, sorry to hear that-it is an increasing problem in the poultry world- i have been lucky so far- every year as Xmas draws near i dread going out in the morning thinking some of my toulouse will be gone- they are locked up everynight but some of the sheds don't have locks and even if they did -if they want them they will get them. I haven't had romans since i was a boy - nice birds and nothing like Embdens temperament wise
regards, David :)

thanks for reply, are you able to breed from toulouse successfully as i am told they are hard to owing to size. how many birds have you actual got and do you breed many goslings? i have sold about thirty eggs this season and have had fair reports about hatching rate .have only bred two goslings myself as wife says i have to many now would like to hach sassos eggs but hard to find supplier how do i go about adding members as friends? thanks

Hi, yes, i breed about 30-40 goslings at least every year- at the moment i have 21 birds- 9 goslings and 12 adults- i have sold 28 goslings and three adults this year so far. There are some pics in the photos of waterfowl forum.
There are some Sasso eggs on ebay:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/12-sasso-LF-meat-table-bird-chicken-hatching-eggs-/160467019732?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry

davidd i know geese are you favorite i have chance of fawn chinese 2year old birds this year have you any knowledge of this breed if so how do you rate them, if i run these with other geese in same pen, sleep in different huts at night will they be all right ( about quarter of acre in size) been told chinese ganders will mate with any female

Hi, the only thing with chinese geese is the noise- they can be very vocal at times- more so than your romans or any other breed- they will mix fine and if you keep them separate at night they should stay in pairs/trios and not cross mate. They will let you know if there are strangers about  They are also great layers ( one of the best geese for eggs) and great broodies.
regards, David :)

thanks for getting back to me regarding chinese geese i have started putting up fence to split two lots of birds up i find this site very interesting and could spend hours on it now i have got the hang of it i hope to have birds in next day or two but i always seem to be going for check ups at hospital .do chinese geese start laying earlier in year as mine don't start till about mid-april i appreciate all help you have giving me in regards to my question

Hi, they should lay mid- feb onwards :)
My toulouse don't start until about the first week of March but some start earlier- traditionally the 14th Feb is the day they start laying!
regards, David :)

getting closer to getting geese, a question i would like to ask i find it getting harder to get small bales of straw do you know of a good alternative farmers only seem to have the large round bales

Horsey people usually want the square bales - but I agree, it's getting harder to find. I found some nice chopped barley straw last year that has been fantastic. I would try asking in equine shops - sometimes there are signs on the side of the road and just keep phoning around the local farms...
