Hi everyone! I have been bitten by the chicken bug ever since we moved out to the country last summer. I have read more on chickens over the past 6 months and I cannot wait to get started!

I have been following this site for a little now and I look forward to pecking .... I mean picking your brains for the wealth of experience that exists here. So bear with me :)

BTW, we are looking to start small .... 11-14 hens and one rooster. I have a barn with a room that I am converting to a coop and I am attaching an enclosed run .... the coop will be about 64 sq ft so there is plenty of room for more that will sure to come :)

You call that starting small.... oh well, I suppose the scale is bigger in the U.S.A! Great to have enough room to get going with such lovely lot of birds. What choice of breeds do you have locally, Tony? Have you decided whether they will be mainly for eggs, or are you hoping to get some meat birds as well?

Anyway, a big welcome to the Forum, it's great to have another member from overseas. We can all learn a lot from hearing about chicken keeping in different environments and it's so interesting when people come on here and tell us about how it's done where they live.

Considering I was going to go with 25 birds, it's small :D

as far as breeds, I am mostly looking for dual purpose with good temperaments ... my brain hurts from all this research :D So the wife wants a showy rooster as well ...

Thank you so much ... I will be posting pictures of the barn conversion and asking for tips along the way .... we will be ordering our chicks in about 3 weeks.... I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Hi Tony and welcome to the forum. Sounds like big scale stuff to me. We really struggle with 40 but they are in 11 coops at the moment. How young are your chicks going to be as they may still need heat? Are they sexed?

They will be sexed and they will be whatever age they are when they ship them ... I am guessing one to two day??? We have everything ready to grow them before they go in the coop .. thanks for the welcome!
