Hello from Leicestershire

Hi all

I'm Helen and I'm a total newcome to the site and to keeping hens. We collected four pol hens just over a week ago - a bluebell, a light sussex, a silver sussex and a total mystery chosen by my youngest son as he 'felt sorry for her'. She had been attacked and lost her tail feathers and is almost bare on her back. She's a sort of pale apricot colour and lays blue eggs although she seems to have decided against laying in the last week. The light sussex laid her first two eggs at the weekend but nothing since.

I'm a totally paranoid new 'parent' and will probably have lots of questions for all you experts out there but I've already answered so many of my questions just by looking through this forum so thanks are in order already. I'm just about to post a question on the health forum though re blood streaked mucus so will be hoping that someone can set my mind at rest.

I certainly am enjoying the hens very much. They all have such different personalities. I let them out of their run for a wander round the garden yesterday evening for the first time. The bluebell (Florence Fluffybum, named by my 5 year old son) didn't dare venture out for ages, the others were all out pretty quickly. The light sussex (Henny, named by my 7 year old son) followed me all over the garden and was keen to explore everywhere. The other two (Hatty and Long Joan Silver who had a slight limp when we first got her home) stuck together but had a great time. Joan had an occasion sprint with wings flapping. So lovely to see them having fun. I'm very attached to them already.

Hello Helen and welcome your hens may go off lay for a little while - this is very common when they are moved- but they will come back into lay quickly, so don't worry if they stop for a few days, hope you enjoy them and have fun. Any questions please ask,

To add to Dadvidd's advice above, when hens regrow feathers (which are mainly protein), they usually stop laying to divert the protein production to feathers.

Hi Helen,

They sound lovely,I think all hens are great.Mine do wonders for my depression,I'd recomend anyone who suffers with depression to buy some hens.
They do have different personalities,ones like your Henny are special.I've got one called Mrs Clucky (named before I got her lol)who follows me everywhere,chatting all the time.Actually,a few off the others also follow me.
I think your hens names are great,kids are brilliant.I'll have to borrow your kids to name some of mine that haven't acquired names yet.I'll see if I can post some pics,then you can ask your children to think up names for them .
