Hi there! Our mum is new to this forum, and is trying so save large fowl Houdan chickens like us in the UK. We're going now, as she doesn't know we use her computer, and there are a few little accidents we need to clear up before she finds out! Please cluck back if you are interested in our breed!

Hello Hampshire Houdans, and welcome to the forum, I do like houdans a very attractive breed :-)99 :-)99

Thanks for the great welcome folks! From my research, I have drawn up a map of the UK showing where all the large fowl Houdan breeders (or at least the ones I could find!) are. There is a serious inbreeding problem and they are almost extinct over here, so I have identified the different blood lines and am working with participating breeders in a cooperative and not for profit informal scheme to out cross the birds and increase the number of breeders (I'm not a breeder myself as I can't keep a cockerel, but do hatching, chick rearing, coordination and transport). If you hear of anyone who is interested in any way, then I may be able to help. Thanks and best wishes!

Best of luck with this Sweden. Lewis Wright thought they were a valuable bird, so they still will be.

Hi Sweden,

My hens are being looked after by a friend who recently hatched six Houdan chicks which haven't been sexed yet - she only has one hen left but has two cockerels. She isn't on the forum so can you PM me with your details so I can pass them on to her?

Hi there!

I know the lady in question, and have visited her recently, but thanks very much for letting me know. I have one 6 week old large fowl Houdan cockerel and also a Dorking hen sitting on 3 Houdan eggs (due out 6th June) - these eggs have had a rocky ride for various reasons (there were 6 originally - 2 were infertile and one got broken either by hen or by a sharp stone sticking out of turf I put beneath nest for humidity). Then there was the very hot weather - I'm just keeping fingers crossed! (I can tell from my hen's behaviour, that she thinks something is underway, but we'll have to see).
