Hello from an Insulated Hen Coop owner

Hi Greatrooster and welcome to the forum.
That's amazing- whereabouts do you live, to have temperatures of -40? The coop looks very cosy but I wondered how it's ventilated. Even at those temperatures I would imagine you probably need to have some means of circulating air. Do the chickens come out during the day, and if so, can they cope with what I imagine would be pretty deep snow?
I'm also interested in which breeds of chickens you keep, to manage the temperatures. And how hot it gets in summer?
Lots of interesting questions!

Hello Greatrooster and welcome. My guess of your location would be Quebec Canada. Having looked at your link I can see that the coop is far bigger than it first appears. I have an old book which recommends insulating a coop in the North of Scotland as there it will get quite cold, but not as cold as you! Problem here in South France is Summer heat and high energy costs, so the cooling has to be passive. The locals have always built their coops from stone which absorbs the heat.

Unimaginable, to us here in the South of the U.K., where a skin of ice on our garden pond was a surprising event. What did it get down to?
Glad your chickens were O.K.
