One of my Silkies is having difficulty walking. She wants to stay in her house (at first I thought she was just being broody) but when I bring her out, she stands then slumps over, almost like she’s had too much to drink!

Her eyes are clear and bright, she seems alert, pecks a little at some corn and will take a little water but generally tries to get back into the house after a minute or so. She struggles, seems to be ‘off kilter’, using her wings to steady herself but it’s not easy for her.

Please help? It’s been over three days now. Also, I think she has runny poo.

Any thoughts would be kindly appreciated.

Amy

Hello Amymac, and welcome to the forum, :-)99 sorry that your first post is a poorly hen..

How old is your Silkie hen? Does she feel a bit light at all?

It does sound by the symptoms to be neurological, and there are one or two diseases that would fit her presentation, one common one that Silkies are prone to Mareks. It really would need, however a vet to have a look at her.

Hello foxy ( not sure about that name! What do your hens think about it? Ha. Yes, sounds like Marek's disease to me, hope its not.

Hi Amymac and welcome to the forum, albeit in these unfortunate circumstances. On the surface it sounds neurological and it may well be. But look at all the other options. Could be sour or impacted crop, or egg bound.
