Hi All

I am not exactly new to chicken keeping but i am always looking for new ideas and advice.

I have had chickens for approx 3 years. Started with Wellsummers and a little black bantam who sat on their eggs. In feb this year i hatched six chicks, in an incubator, from a mixed batch of eggs i bought off e-bay. Luckily i got one cockerell and five ladies, i believe the cockerell is a Maran and one of the hens is a warren, but may need help identifying the others so i will get around to posting some pics soon.

I wanted a variety of types and i am not fussy about pure breeds as long as they are happy and healthy. I live in a 17th century cottage, which has two built-in cupboards with doors to the outside, they were crying out to be filled with chickens. If you duck in through the 3ft high doors, it is possible to stand upright, there is a dividing wall and a large beam which is at shoulder height, which allows them to roost up away from draughts. The other great feature is that the cupboards back onto the boiler room and dining room which has a large radiator along the wall on the other side of the wall, i'm sure it helps with the temperature in the colder months. I have fenced off the patio outside the cupboards, pinning back the doors during the day to allow them to roam in and out, i leave the food and water inside and they have a nest box on each side too.

I also have 5 very cute, week old chicks which are from the six month old hens running with the Maran cockerell. I wanted to see if all his bluster, chasing and wing flapping was amounting to anything, and now he's a daddy. I do have another chicken house out on the stable yard to move the broody hen and the chicks to, when they are a little older and too big for the rabbit hutch they are in at the moment.

I will leave it there for now, else i will get a name for going on and on, unfortunately i could go on about my chickens all day. Oh did i mention i we have Khaki Campbell ducks too.............. another story!

Bye for now Jojo
