Hi All
I am new to this forum so 'Hello'! In fact I am new to any forum of any kind so forgive me if I have made any mistakes already
I live in Lincoln with my husband and 2 young children. I have 4 warren hybrids that are now 2 years old. They are lovely friendly hens who adore cuddles from my 5 year old (she wants to be a vet when she grows up and seems to be able to handle pretty much any animal and get it to do what she wants without any anxieties on either side! Her favourite hen (Mary) just goes to sleep in her arms!)
To date we have got on well with our hens and they have laid an average of 3 eggs between then for 365 days a year eating up and no problems until.............. the red mite arrived in their millions. We have been trying to deal with them using the advice on your fantastic website - thank you
I am intrigued about the thought of using coke - I don't think I will ever drink the stuff again if that works!!!! Anyway, I will let you know how I get on........ :?: So far we have gone down the route of steam cleaning the house and using a dusting spray on the house and birds - without much joy: So. we then moved on to pressure washing the house and using a permethrin based residual spray afterwards, changing the bedding daily alongside dusting the birds and the house every 3 days - this approach seems to be working and the numbers have been drastically reduced. We are continuing to apply the spray every 3 days. I guess this will be an ongoing issue for us now. Egg laying has all but stopped and is at best very sporadic. We have almost lost one hen bringing her back from the brink.
Once we have the mite under control we want to introduce 2 new hens because we are not getting enough eggs to supply the family. I am interested to know any experience anyone has of introducing Warren Hybrids together. I have read the FAQ's but don't know if the advice and experience detailed applies to hybrids or pedigree birds or if they are any different in this respect.
Our run and coop is not huge but we have been told by someone in the know (apparently) that it is plenty big enough for around 10 birds. We plan to put the new hens in a small enclosure inside the main run for a couple of weeks so they can 'get used' to each other and then, to let them get on with it under supervision.
I would really like to read if anyone else has any experiences of introducing warrens together.
Thanks very much. I look forward to reading your advice, posts and stories over the coming weeks and months. NCH
