Just nipped over to the local poultry auction to get some chicken food, wondered round the pens and saw a small cardboard box..... just knew I shouldn't have looked......inside were....

One little bantam cross hen with nine chicks in with her......

Yup, bid and got her and her babies, then spent the rest of sunday and most of today making her a nursery in the big run

We now have sixteen chickens, including our hi-line hybrid girls and knowing our luck, bet the babies are ALL cockerels :-)07

Will post pics when I can find my camera lead.....

Good for you ! Sometimes impulse buying is good for the soul ! It can certainly throw up a few surprises. I went to the old Sevenoaks Market 20 years ago and bought a bantam hen and chicks. She was blue as were some of the chicks. I still have her descendants here today and the family have provided me with many, many broodies to rear chicks and many more stolen nests in the hay stack and under the hay racks of the goats, presenting me with and rearing hundreds of chicks.

Lovely story. Sister-in-law did the same. Bought a cheeping box which turned out to be full of Marans.

thats why i dont visit anywhere   i would be sooooooooooooooooooooooo bad i would have to be strapped up mouth taped and stuck in a straightjacket literally to stop me doing something like that , its bad enough that my friend who now does my culling for me has told me his brother breeds tortosies which is something i have always always wanted since i was a child and have been having ideas of converting part of my chicken run so i could have 2 or 3 in there only thing stopping me is i just cant afford them they aint cheap no more .

karminski I would advise you to stop now, all that thinking will get you 'itching' to go do something you shouldn't :D :D

your telling me , i have been sorting out houses and pens within my run as i now have 3 bantams broody and my big maran who i have used before { god does she stress or what if she dont get chicks :o :o } and i dont know what to do as i do want to hatch one breed that i do want as i would prefer to risk hatching then to pay something like £25 plus per bird which to me is shocking but i dont know where to stick who its baddddddddddddd .i have the rabbit hutch which the wee little dutch millifluers have gone back to using if lanky chucks them out of the bantam house of a night time but i would perfer to use that as the broody house so i feel stuck as i would be upsetting my little dutches if they could not sleep in there   , it is big enough though to section of one end so they can still using it but its cutting the wood to the right size without bodging it up so then one end can be blocked of .
