Have seen the magical way you experienced keepers can tell what sex chickens are by looking at pictures so below (hopefully) are some pics of our rescued 'Broilers'.
Have I got boys or girls?Resized.jpgResized1.jpgResized2.jpgResized3.jpgResized4.jpgResized5.jpg

Just as I expected from watching their behaviour! Alvin is very boisterous! My little boy is delighted as he thinks cockerals protect the ladies after watching Secret Life of chickens. Thank goodness my bedroom is away from the garden. Best break the news to the neighbours & see how they feel about Alvin now ;)
Thanks so much David :D

I have no idea how old they are. They escaped from a big industrial broiler shed & I know they get put in at 1 day old & I may be wrong but i think they are removed at 45 days (correct me if i'm wrong experts). My son was doing his work experience in a construction yard next door to the shed & he saw them running round the yard & caught them as normally the local dogs 'deal' with them & as we already have 2 hybrids layers he bought them home for me. I would have thought they would be the same age, can't imagine that they mix ages in the sheds. Think Alvin is bigger due to him being a boy? We did have a third Eleanor who was at least a third of the size of Alvin with hardly any feathers but she died after we had them a week.

Hi, they will be the same age- they are all put in same broiler house at the same time- they don't normally mix different ages together in case of cross contamination - just some do better than others and get more food so grow faster etc.
regards, David :)

Well David, thought I'd let you know, Alvins voice 'broke' this morning and he attempted a sort of crowing noise. Very amusing & had the older girls looking around in amazement! Think he's gonna be loud when he gets into it properly though. Poor neighbours lol

A deep crow can be less noticeable though, our welsummer was deep but seems quieter than our banty boys :D

hope all goes well with your neighbours though. Alvins very cute! I love his cheeky picture.

Quick update again. His crow though loud, doesn't go on for long. Just a couple of crows then he stops. On the neighbour front, nobody has heard him yet so all good. Think I must be the first one up in our close to let the chickens out so only me hearing Alvin so far :D
Thanks ncotb Alvin is very cute! Even displaying gentlemanly behaviour already by letting the girls eat first when treats are chucked down for them :P

as they are both commercial meat chickens i would go easy on the food and keep them on low protein rations, they can grow too big for their legs to cope.

Have stopped giving the broilers treats as they just do nothing but eat and are now twice the size if not more than our hybrids!
Alvin has now become fully mature & has started attempting to 'tread' the little hybrids! They dont seem to like his advances though because they fight him off and then chase him round the garden pecking him. They are very amusing to watch!
A question for the experts - from the pictures you said Theodore looks like a girl. Is it possible to have a he/she chicken? Theodore still looks like a girl, but exhibits both girl and boy behaviour. She dives in at food time rather than standing back waiting which Alvin does, she has reddened up but not laying, Alvin has not 'tried it on' with her but she has 'tried to mount' Brittany and Jeanette!!!!!! When Theodore and Alvin sqaure up to each other their neck feathers stand on end which I know males do! Do I have a sexually confused chicken lol?????
