I just wonder if anyone has tried the grass seed adapted for poultry? It seems to have added things like clover and parsley, but my birds don't seem keen on these things so I wonder whether straightforward ryegrass might be better.

I tried making my own and was sowing it in trays but gave up when it took two weeks to grow a tray and 10 mins to obliterate it! Different if you have enough room to sow a decent size plot. I now just sprout seed and give it to them as a supplement. Wheat, millet and mung (beansprouts) are all easy and get gobbled up.
Tried to take a picture of my setup but couldn't attach it on my phone. Basically it is a stack of 4 trays that you can put under the tap to rinse all in one go twice a day. Use the top tray, refill and put it on the bottom to cycle round.

Thanks very much Rick for your clever idea about sprouting. I'm growing grass in the ground over my allotment

I think mustard and alfalfa are often in the mix. I guess, if you separate it out into plots to cycle then you could just start with ryegrass and try scattering different seed amongst it.
If they are keeping it trimmed low then my lot tell me that young wheat is delicious :)
