I'm worried about Ethel, one of my geese. She's about 2 years old and she's developed this loose flap of skin under her chin. Also, she doesn't seem as wide eyed and bright as she used to be. The easiest way to see what I mean is posting photos.
This is her back in August

I have taken her to the vet who had a good feel around and has found there's nothing obvious and that it is just loose skin. However, I think it's probably a symptom of something else. She's eating, seems happy enough but is shaking her head more than usual I think and just doesn't seem so lively. Also, though she's preening plenty and is very clean and tidy, in the bad weather of late, I think she's not been as waterproof. Any ideas would be gratefully received. Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark, ahh isn’t Ethel gorgeous.
I see what you mean by not being as bright eyed. I had a similar problem with on of my geese, he gets stuff stuck under his tongue, bits of grass and grain and sometimes leeches from the pond, it shows up as a pouch under his beak. Did the vet investigate inside her mouth?

Hello Zo. I don't think she did actually. Also, I've had leech issues with at least one of my ducklings. I'll have a bit of a wrestle with her tomorrow and see if I can find anything. Many thanks,

Mark

I found the best way to investigate was to put a bite bar at the back of the beak as their beams are so strong, my fella nearly broke my finger when he clamped down! I used a short length of bamboo pole for the bite bar, once that is in place you can have a rummage but you will need one person to hold her! We had three people at the vets and struggled!
