I keep saying I am not going to hatch anymore chicks until Spring but the Millefleur Pekins, Lemon Millefleur Sabelpoots, Gold Silkies and the Polish all started laying again so I popped 30 eggs in the incubator. Unfortunately each one was fertile and I now have 30 cute little chicks running around in the brooder. (was hoping this time of year would get around 50% fertility at best). Rearing chicks this time of year is very time consuming, constantly checking that they are warm enough, not to hot etc.... But I wouldn;t have it any other way, chicks are so sweet and it's lovely to see them grow up and each get their own personalities.
((Lydia - no you can;t have any, there is no room on your sofa for anymore!! :D :D ))

Wow,congratulations Sue,I bet they are all adorable. We are all gluttons for punishment. In six weeks time the weather might be improving,on a nice day they'll be able to pop outside to play.
Don't worry,I'm not getting anymore.....at the moment.Sue,Jenny and Henny Penny do want a hubby to boss around though, they don't fancy Bertie.......

I am getting ready to bring my Naked Necks back into production so I can hatch a few out. But this year it will be small batches of about 20 or so at a time. Last time I did a hatch through the winter I did groups of 100 and it was just too much work.

Ahh you know what Sue - I have 25 Cream Legbar eggs for a new bloodline coming to me in a few days time... and I shouldn't really be hatching yet!

The chap has kept them for 20 years and they look like good birds so I couldn't resist!

Tim, I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get 90% females from the eggs (you want at least 2 males!)
My cream legbars haven;t started to lay yet although if their heads get any redder I am sure they will explode!!!! :D :D :D

Good luck

I put lots of barbu eggs in last year and thought id get a few, they had lay in a tray aswell for 2 weeks, and my incubator was empty so i thought id give them a try, i ended up with lots of little barbu d anvers they all hatched  ,

I love sabelpoots, i got my first lot last year and they are my faves! little lemons they are, id love to get more sabelpoot eggs but my incubator is full just now, maybe spring time! :P

Ha ha ha --its not just me then!! Of course none of us would hatch this time of year ( would we!) I know the chicks are work now BUT I am not convinced fertility is lower , infact I think its worse in the autumn. Those sablepoots I hatched---just wondering---- (they are lemon mf) 2 are darker with sl. dark patches on heads ,---I am just wondering does the colour relate to thier sex?? Just that the darker two already seem a bit chunkier to me and a bit more boyish--5 days old ??? They continue to scuttle everywhere -maybe they need some Ritalin? ;) Ros
