hi there
i think this is for tim have you thought of haveing a room where
we can go and talk on line as sometimes the question we ask needs
a reply quite quickly and at least that way we can get to chat to friends
about our favorite subjects chucks just a thought what does anyone else
think of this many thanks tony :D :D

Hi Tony,

Yes, good idea although the main problem for me is lack of time - I usually spend a few hours per day on the sites and I try to get back to people with a suggestion as soon as I can but 75% of my time is spent on the 'back end' of the sites maintaining them or modifying / creating pages to provide new content or editing photos, checking for broken links, removing spam messages, answering emails etc etc and if there was a chat room, I think I'd never get anything done at all  My latest project is to create the breed pages - So far I've done Orpington and Australorp but there are many more to write...

Don't take it the wrong way, I certainly enjoy what I'm doing but I don't think I'd have the time for a chat room or to do it properly at least anyway.. :?

I think it's worth me thinking about it for the future though when there are more people online - it could be very lively then.

Tim

hi Tim
well me and my family think you do a great job especialy the daughter
she loves to read the letters and she said if there was a chat room id
never get my work done either wel at least they would know where i was lol

Chat rooms are brilliant, and can be very good.I can appreciate though that there are not enough hours in a day for Tim to get everything done that needs doing, along with paid work,a family, and actually seeing his own chooks and ducks.
Maybe a more feasible idea might be for the moderators to have a rota, when one of them will definitely be online for 1 hour a day,so they can answer any emergency queries promptly.
I do realise that everyone involved with this forum has a life to lead, but maybe between the mods this would be feasible.Give all of them a chance to get away from the forum, and notify Tim of problems only he can deal with.

Well, real emergencies are for the Vet - I'm not qualified in this area but do have a number of years experience in keeping chickens and it has been a real passion of mine so along the way, you pick things up and read / learn more. I usually try to check the forum once a day at least.

Actually, I have just recently managed to get a very experienced poultry vet who has had his own poultry consultancy for a number of years to write some articles for the site - I hope we can afford an article every other month for the next 6 months and see how the funds look but he's quite flexible about this.

We are going to start off with articles on Respiratory Problems, Mycoplasmas, Digestive System problems, Examination and the tests a poultry lab can run for you and what they can tell you.... and then explore other areas if you are really brave like DIY Post Mortem!

I hope this will bring a little more specialist content to the site but will explain things in English rather than Veterinary speak.

Tim.

PS - Will move this to the general chatter forum ;)

I don't see how that can really work tbh. Moderators are not really here to answer emergency questions but to moderate the forum and keep it clean and tidy from spammers, edit posts, move things around and so on. They are members of the community helping keep the forum a nice place to visit. While Tim and I try to answer what we can, (Tim doing a great job I must say) speaking for myself I do so as a forum member, not as a mod. I certainly don't wear my mod hat when replying to poultry related matters. I'd not like to think people are relying on Tim and myself to answer all their problems or questions as sometimes we don't know either. As Tim has said real emergencies are for the vet. People posting questions here have to remember all we can offer is advice, insight and suggestions. Same as anyone else replying.

I certainly don't see that having set times to be online is workable as forums are organic and ebb and flow. People cannot ever really commit to set times online and come and go as they are able.
