I have eight African Browns and a small 1/8th acre pond. The geese will not go on the water. They will dabble along the edges but won't take a swim. They love their little pool. Any ideas?

I clean our pond once a year and the geese will be straight in there, diving and swimming under the water once it's clean. But, give it a month and it's cloudy and green (has a gravel and UV filter but no match for them) and I'll barely see them on it. The ducks spend much of the night on it and will often be on there having a wash and a play but my geese are the same as yours. They've got several large trugs that I put clean water in every day and they'll be straight in there as soon as they're refilled despite their size.

This is a trout pond and pretty clean. I wonder if it's something instinctual that they may be afraid of being eaten by a fish or something weird like that...?

Yes. I have brought them to the pond about 5 times and each time they just dabble & drink but don't step out into the pond. I'm tempted to bring their little pool down there and put it in the pond...They love their kiddie pool.

Ah, I had the geese at least a year before I put the pond in and they were pretty unsure of it initially and they did pretty much as you've described. If they're only visiting I'd imagine they'll need a few trips and a bit of time ambling around it before one'll takes the plunge and after that they'll all be in. My geese went completely nuts when they finally went in.

Hi! Yes I would agree with Honk, they do take ages to fully trust a large pond. Oddly they may not be able to swim very well and feel out of their depth. I have three geese who came from somewhere with a kiddie pool, I put them on my big pond and one nearly drowned, they just didnt know how to swim or keep balance. they got it, after about a year!

Keep your phone handy too, when mine worked it out they went nuts: https://photos.app.goo.gl/pxN3kWBirCYTguAh9
